Details
This thoroughly reimagined 1968 Ford Mustang built by renowned Classic Recreations of Garland, TX, is not only a Shelby-inspired build, but carries the Shelby name, used under special license by Shelby Licensing. It’s a comprehensive modern take on the full-bore Shelby GT500 Mustang from 1967, but with modern upgrades throughout. The powerplant is a Ford Performance 5.0-liter Gen 3 Coyote crate engine, with twin overhead camshafts and 32 valves in total. With a compression ratio of 12.0:1, it utilizes an aluminum block and high-flow cylinder heads. Further engine modifications, including Fuel Air Spark Technology’s electronic fuel injection increases horsepower from the original Ford rated output of 460 to 490hp. Power is sent through a 6-speed automatic transmission to a 9.0-inch rear end with 3.50 gearing and traction control. The fully redone chassis and suspension uses a Mustang II-style front suspension with power rack & pinion steering from Rod & Custom Motor Sports, and a rear coilover-type system from Total Control Products, with anti-roll bars front and rear. Stopping is handled with hydro-boost-assisted red Wilwood calipers clamping on cross-drilled and slotted zinc-washed rotors at all four corners. It is also equipped with a Concept One pulley system, Be Cool aluminum radiator with dual electric fans, electric fuel pump, MSD Pro Billet distributor and blaster coil, Wilwood electric e-brake and trunk-mounted battery. BBK long-tube headers feed into MagnaFlow mufflers. The all-steel Ford body has been professionally bodyworked and expertly finished in rich black paint with racing stripes and GT500-spec body modifications, such as rocker panel side-exhaust exits, a Shelby fuel cap and side stripes, and the underside is also detailed. The passenger cabin features a deluxe 1967 Mustang dashboard and interior door panels. The seats are leather-faced Carroll Shelby Scat Rally Series 1000 units with high backs, fitted with G-Force five-point camlock harnesses, and floor mats with GT500CR logos. A combination of Classic Instruments and AutoMeter gauges are used, and the center console incorporates a Kenwood audio system with DVD navigation and four-channel amplifier powering Kicker speakers. Along with a cosmetic roll bar installed in the interior, an aluminum custom Shelby steering wheel with polished wood rim is atop a Flaming River tilt steering column. The Old Air Products system provides air conditioning and heat. This GT500CR rides on 18-inch Shelby wheels, with knock-off centers wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport tires. This Classic Recreations Shelby re-creation bears an authorized Carroll Shelby signature and is automatically listed in the Shelby Registry.
