Details

This 1966 Chrysler Imperial is a re-creation of the "Black Beauty" as seen in "The Green Hornet" television series, filmed from 1966 to 1967. Created as a radio serial in 1936 by George W. Trendle and Fran Striker with input from radio director James Sewell, "The Green Hornet" has featured across the media landscape since its inception, with an intensely loyal following today. For the 1966-67 TV season, ABC aired "The Green Hornet" as a live-action series, starring Van Williams as the anti-heroic, crime-fighting Green Hornet and scene-stealing martial arts phenom, Bruce Lee. Additional TV appearances by the duo included a two-part episode during Season 2 of "Batman." A high-tech crimefighting car has been part of the franchise since its inception. Accordingly, the renowned Hollywood customizer Dean Jeffries was commissioned by the studio to build a suitable ride for the show's leading characters, and he delivered with a highly customized 1966 Imperial sedan, built at a reported cost of $50,000, finished in many coats of hand-rubbed custom black lacquer paint, in keeping with its name. the Imperial was equipped with the latest high-tech surveillance gear plus evasive and offensive weaponry. According to the Barris Kustoms Inc. website, "Black Beauty" was sent to George and his wizard-like crew for some final touches. While only used for the single-season run of "The Green Hornet" on TV, "Black Beauty" immediately took on a life of its own, captivating legions of fans at car shows and exhibitions worldwide. This iteration of "Black Beauty" was formerly owned by George Barris/Barris Kustom Industries, and it was featured in a 1975 Hot Rod magazine pictorial article covering a selection of Barris' many unforgettable custom and film cars. Formerly part of the Barris Star Car Collection managed by Barris Kustom Industries, this Imperial was displayed at numerous venues, including the Petersen Motorama Cars of the Stars Museum established by L.A. publishing mogul Robert Petersen on Hollywood Boulevard near the famed Grauman's Chinese Theatre during the 1970s. Fitting its "superhero" purpose, this version of "Black Beauty" is propelled by a powerful Chrysler 413ci V8 engine, paired with a push-button automatic transmission and harnessed by power brakes. Other choice highlights include a sunroof, film-prop satellite array mounted on the trunk lid, prop rockets stowed in the front and rear bumpers, modified Lucas lights, added KC Hilites and an extremely rare set of Apache Stingray wheels by Appliance. Fittingly, the Imperial's glovebox features the signatures of Adam West, Burt Ward, Dean Jeffries, George Barris, Van Williams, Dick Dean and other personalities. Dr. Berkowitz acquired this ex-George Barris "Black Beauty" in 2022, and it comes with a Certificate of authenticity and a letter from Barris Kustom Industries. From The Dr. Stewart A. Berkowitz Collection.
