As Shelby automobile production transferred to Ford Motor Company in 1968, the GT500 got aggressive new styling cues. For the first time, convertible variants of the GT350 and GT500 were available. Still, Shelby unleashed an additional variant: the GT500KR 'King of the Road.' Powered by a 428ci Cobra Jet engine, the KR came equipped with under-hood bracing and staggered rear shocks. Bearing Shelby serial #2525 and listed in the SAAC Registry, this 1968 Shelby GT500KR convertible is one of 518
produced. Of those, it is one of only 41 factory-finished in Wimbledon White. The vehicle was sold new to JB Depriest in Birmingham, AL, in May 1968 and was fitted with dealer-installed air conditioning. One repaint in Wimbledon White was applied to the Shelby, which retains the original black-bucket-seat interior and matching-numbers 428ci Cobra Jet V8 engine. Other choice highlights include a C6 Select-O-Matic transmission, 3.50 Traction-Lok rear axle, tilt-away steering wheel and power-assisted brakes, steering and convertible top. The vehicle has documented ownership history from its inception, including copies of previous titles, the original Build Sheet and sales order sheet, the original Shelby invoice, and listing in the Shelby Registry. Acquired for the Mile High Collection in 2015, this GT500KR was in a private collection for the prior 12 years.
