1978 FORD RANCHERO GT PICKUP

The owner passed away leaving the car in a storage building. His son called me about the car that I was shown approximately 10 years ago. He had never seen the car. He went to look at the car and did not want to fool with it. He offered it to me and I said yes. I had only seen the car once before. I took a battery and gas can with me. I unhooked the coil wire and turned it over to get oil pressure, which came quickly. I removed the fuel line from the fuel pump inlet and put a hose in the gas can. Then I poured fuel in the carb and it started right up. It still had antifreeze in the radiator. I drove it onto the trailer and took it to my shop. I noticed the steering had a lot of play when I loaded the car, so the first thing I did was put it on stands and checked it out. The hard plastic steering coupling was broken. The fuel in the tank was very bad and it had some rust in it. I acid-cleaned the tank and sealed it. I installed a new pickup and filter, changed the oil and filter, rebuilt the carb and flushed the brake fluid. The brake drums spring clip retainers were still in place. Looks like all hoses are original. I changed the antifreeze using distilled water, installed 3 lbs. of R12, and the air conditioning is great. Next I took it to smog and it passed really well. I took a couple of short trips approximately 30 miles down the freeway and the car runs great. The cruise works as does everything else. The left front fender was repaired at one time. The bed looks like it hauled groceries only and the interior is like new. Posi-traction acts like a Detroit Locker. This is a great looking car, and is a pleasure to drive.
