This 1969 Mustang Fastback is powered by an original 427ci V8 SOHC engine. Ford built the SOHC 427 nicknamed the 'Cammer' to compete with Mopar's HEMI in NASCAR racing. The Ford FE 427 had been strong in NASCAR, but the HEMI was taking the lead in the 1963 and 1964 timeframe. Ford put together a breakneck speed program to develop the Cammer. After developing the engine, a funny thing happened: NASCAR changed the rules and the Cammer would not qualify for NASCAR, so the engine never made it to this circuit. In fact, Ford never put this engine in a car, and it was only sold over the counter primarily to drag racers. This is one of Ford's most iconic engines ever built. This Cammer engine was purchased from a car enthusiast in Australia. The block has the large 'H' welded into its back side with a 1966 date code and the number 269, to confirm its authenticity as a SOHC 427 engine. The engine was rebuilt by Christiana Muscle Cars in Delaware. The engine work was designed to be powerful yet street able, with a compression of 11 to 1 and near 700hp. It is fitted with dual 4-barrel carburetors that were a stock configuration for the Cammer engine. The engine is married up to a rebuilt 4-speed Ford Toploader transmission, Detroit Locker 4.30 gears and a 9-inch rear end. The 1969 fastback presented was originally a Mach 1 and came from the Midwest. It was rotisserie restored about 10 years ago, and the paint was recently refreshed. The body is straight and is in spectacular condition overall. The car appears relatively stock as it would in 1969 but obviously with modifications to fit the massive engine. Several trick adjustments were made during assembly. The body was kept subtle to maintain the drag racer look, so the louvers, rear spoiler and side lamps were left off. An electronic fuel pump has been installed but hidden to again appear stock. The only thing that really stands out is the big Boss 429 hood scoop. A Mustang II suspension system was purchased from Rod and Custom Motorsports in South Carolina and installed prior to the main bodywork. The setup has manual steering and brakes to create a drag-racing feel. With the suspension system, manual steering, the car is responsive and just wants to go.
