Introduced for the 1963 model year, the Buick Riviera is rightfully recognized today as a watershed of automotive design - regardless of the era. Its origins are rooted in GM Design Chief Bill Mitchell, who spied a Rolls-Royce while attending the 1959 London Motor Show. Already a devoted Ferrari enthusiast, Mitchell combine his favorite styling cues from both manufacturers into his Project XP-715 design study, originally conceived as the 'LaSalle II' for Cadillac, but turned down and subsequently handed over to Buick as the Riviera. The resulting Riviera was a massive success and defined American luxury for an entire generation. Initially powered by Buick's 401 Nailhead V8, development brought even greater power and performance with the debut of the new 425ci V8 for 1965. Thankfully, the Riviera's winning design formula remained virtually unchanged, including the car's signature clamshell headlamps. This 1965 Riviera is now offered from the Gordon Apker Collection. Prior ownership included two doctors for 40 years, one subsequent owner for the next 10 years, and then Mr. Apker. The engine was rebuilt with only limited use and new suspension parts were installed at that time. All brightwork and glass was removed for a repaint in its original and very rare black exterior color. The interior remains largely original with the exception of new wood-grain trim. The Riviera's various systems are understood to be in good working order, making it a great car to drive and enjoy. Over $1,300 of factory options include C60 air conditioning, A01Soft-Ray tinted glass, D33 remote mirror, U63 D1 Sonomatic Radio, A46 4-way power seat, A31 power windows, C50 rear defroster, N37 tilt wheel, P02 simulated wire wheel covers and A50 custom trim. A striking example of a true design icon from the celebrated 'Mad Men' era of the mid-1960s, this Riviera is another desirable offering from the Gordon Apker Collection.
