Description

Summary

Known as \"Durangoneer.\" Powered by a modified 5.7-liter HEMI 8-cylinder engine paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Built for Popular Mechanics magazine and featured at 2006 SEMA.

Details

This custom 1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is powered by a 2004 Dodge Durango 5.7-liter HEMI 8-cylinder engine modified with polished aluminum valve covers, a polished high-performance air intake from Mopar Performance and Denso ITL16 spark plugs, paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. This SUV combines the body of a 1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer with the shortened and strengthened chassis of a 2004 HEMI-powered Dodge Durango. Highlights include independent front suspension, rack & pinion steering, multi-link rear suspension and four-wheel antilock disc brakes. The frame of the Durango was shortened by 10 inches to accommodate the Wagoneer at a 109-inch wheelbase. This vehicle rolls on new Sumitomo tires and features a custom paint job by John Van Alpen of Van Alpen and Sons. The custom interior by Ed Geyer of the Recovery Room features a custom-modified dash from the Durango, power windows, power door locks and cruise control. Final assembly was complete by Rich Taylor's well-known Minisport firm in Sharon, CT. Known as \"Durangoneer,\" this Wagoneer was custom-built as a project for Popular Mechanics magazine and was featured in articles regarding the build in the May and June 2006 issues of the magazine. It was also featured at the 2006 SEMA Show and 2006 Pocono NASCAR race.
