Details
This Mercedes-Benz 280SL roadster is powered by a matching-numbers 2.8-liter inline-6 engine and routed to the rear wheels through an original Mercedes factory replacement transmission unit, which may have been installed as a dealer warranty replacement. Mechanically, the car received a sympathetic refresh during the restoration, including a new radiator, starter, fan and fan clutch. Recent service included an oil and filter change, as well as a new fuel pump and fuel strainer. The dealer-installed air conditioning unit blower and compressor are operational, though it does not produce cold air. Starting out as a well-preserved example, this vehicle underwent a cosmetic restoration, including a full color change and was repainted in a custom shade of Deep Green. During the restoration, the bumpers and other trim pieces were rechromed or replaced as needed. The original notches on each headlight remain intact and the hood number matches the data card, indicating originality. This model's exterior is matched by a cabin featuring supple leather seats and large readable gauges. The interior wood trim appears to have been restored or replaced. The seats were retrimmed in Palomino-colored leather, the door panels were re-covered and a matching carpet was installed. The original dash was re-covered in matching leather. An original precious wood hand-finished and inscribed Nardi steering wheel emphasizes the classic interior. The instrument gauges function properly and appear to have been restored. The radio was replaced with an Alpine head unit, which provides hi-fidelity stereo sound through two Infinity speakers mounted on the shelf behind the seats. This example is nicknamed \"The Pagoda\" for the unique shape of the Paul Braque-designed removable coupe roof visually reminiscent of Asian temples. This two-top convertible features a matching hardtop and manually retractable soft-top. This 280SL was manufactured on January 5, 1971, and is one of the last 850 models produced during the four-year production run, which ended February 1971. The sale includes a spare tire, an original Mercedes-Benz tool roll, a tire jack and a replacement data card listing the original equipment and options. The five-digit odometer reads 32,034 actual miles.
