Found in a barn after 30 years, this fully documented, matching-numbers 1968.5 Shelby GT500KR underwent a no-expense-spared concourse restoration and is listed in the Shelby Registry. This car’s R-code designation denotes the early April introduction of the Cobra Jet V8 engine that prompted Shelby to add “King of the Road” designation to the GT500. It is powered by an original 428ci Cobra Jet engine has been completely rebuilt and detailed as new, dyno-tested 360hp at 5,200 rpm and 364 ft/lbs of torque, paired with a C6 automatic transmission with cast-iron tail housing, a 3.50 Traction-Loc rear axle and 31-spline axles. The original drivetrain features an original date-code-correct engine, with a block date of May 6, 1968, as well as the transmission and rear end. It is equipped with original intake and carburetor. It is also equipped with exhaust manifolds. The underbody shows red oxide primer, per the original Build Sheet, and a fuller exhaust. This Shelby's authentication confirms it is one of 183 produced with the Raven Black 388-paint code, born June 26, 1968. The exterior features grille-mounted Lucas lights and sequential taillights, as well as Autolite adjustable date-coded shocks. This car rides on original 1968 Ford Hayes steel wheels with period-correct blackwall tires, wearing Shelby Mag-style wheel covers. The car is fitted with new glass, rechromed original bumpers and all-original fiberglass fenders, doors and quarters. The interior features black-knit vinyl bucket seats and sport deck rear seat, all original except for the carpet, and sports all the Shelby items: a tilt-away steering wheel, center console with embossed Cobra logo and wood-grain accents, correct seat belts and, of course, the factory original rollbar.
