This custom 1964 Mercury Comet Lightweight is one of 22 factory-built drag racers constructed by Lincoln-Mercury for the NHRA's A/Factory Experimental (A/FX) class. It is powered by Ford's 427/425hp High-Riser V8 engine paired with a Hurst-shifted 4-speed manual transmission and a Ford 9-inch rear end equipped with 4.56 gears. The original lightweight configuration features fiberglass body panels, including the hood, front bumper, fenders and doors, along with lightweight glass. Fender-mounted headers channel the exhaust. The suspension, modified by Dearborn Steel Tubing, features reinforced steel tubing to hold up to competitive drag racing. Finished in Wimbledon White, this Comet's exterior retains its factory-correct lightweight construction, complemented by the stripped-down red interior. It features a radio and heater delete, lightweight bucket seats and a dash-mounted tachometer. The car underwent a multi-year rebuild in the 1980s utilizing all-original components, including the drivetrain, interior and suspension, retaining its authenticity as a factory A/FX drag racer. This example has since been fitted with a new body but retains its original engineering and factory lightweight specifications.
