This 1960 Ford Fairlane is a re-creation of the Mayberry police car seen in "The Andy Griffith Show" TV series that aired on CBS from 1960 to 1968. "The Andy Griffith Show" remains one of the most beloved sitcoms ever produced. Originating from an episode of the Danny Thomas Show, the program starred Andy Griffith as Andy Taylor, the widowed sheriff of Mayberry, NC, deputy Barney Fife, played by Don Knotts, and Andy's Aunt Bee, portrayed by Frances Bavier. Hollywood legend Ron Howard played Andy's young son, Opie. Celebrating simpler times, the show was a huge success, never placing lower than seventh in Nielsen ratings and ending its final season at number one. Both Don Knotts and Frances Bavier earned six Emmy Awards between them during the popular show's run. Today, "The Andy Griffith Show" lives on in syndication worldwide. The vehicles used on the show have always attracted much interest over the years, sparking the creation of faithful replicas of the various police cruisers used on-screen by Andy and Barney. This 1960 Ford Fairlane 500 sedan is a captivating recreation of Barney's cruiser, in police-worthy basic form, including a 2-barrel 292ci V8 engine, column-shifted automatic transmission and original-appearing upholstery. Proper police gear includes a period-style police radio, rear whip antenna, red "gumball" roof light, driver-side spotlight and a vintage police siren. Mannequins, including one inspired by Mayberry deputy Barney Fife, heighten the fun factor of this nostalgic, TV-inspired vehicle, which was acquired by Dr. Berkowitz in July 2012.
