Details

Offered from collector ownership, climate-controlled storage and attentive care, this 1979 Volkswagen Beetle cabriolet is offered in original condition with just 613 miles (the title reads mileage exempt). A late-production example built during August 1979, it is finished in distinctive and attractive Turquoise paint over black vinyl upholstery, complemented by a black convertible top and matching boot cover. Powered by the original air-cooled 1,585cc flat-4 engine and 4-speed manual rear

transaxle, this final-year Beetle cabriolet is unmodified, exceptionally original and rides on a set of factory wheels mounting radial tires. Documents include the original warranty and maintenance manuals. This 1979 Volkswagen Beetle cabriolet is as close as you can get to a showroom-fresh example - nearly 44 years after it was produced. Rooted in Germany's prewar KdF-Wagen initiative, the Beetle was conceived from the early experiments of Project 12 at the Porsche facility, where engineers settled on a rear-engine layout and a simple yet effective platform chassis. Countless revisions yielded no less than 30 distinct prototypes by the mid-1930s, with the Series 38 design developed for production. Continuously produced through 2003, Volkswagen's Type 1 Beetle was remarkably similar in concept to Henry Ford's Model T - an affordable 'people's car' of durable design, economical operation and low price. Development of the Beetle was swift, with select updates applied throughout its historic production run. Derivative models included the Transporter van, Karmann-Ghia sports car, Type 181 'Thing' and the Karmann-built cabriolet. A virtual multitude of improvements provided even greater comfort and convenience for 1965 and well beyond. The improved Super Beetle debuted in the early 1970s with a modern MacPherson strut front suspension, slightly revised fontal styling and myriad detail refinements. The Super Beetle cabriolet would continue in North America through 1979, with Bosch fuel injection adding useful pep to the venerable air-cooled 4-cylinder VW engine and the ability to comply with tougher emissions requirements.
