Details

Prior to its restoration, this 1959 Mercedes-Benz 190SL roadster was a sound, solid and complete original vehicle. Finished in classic Silver paint over a handsomely restored and red-trimmed interior, the 190SL has enjoyed climate-controlled storage. Renowned for its fine driving dynamics and wonderful open-air experience, this 1959 Mercedes-Benz 190SL is a high-quality and beautifully preserved example throughout. Introduced at the 1954 New York International Motor Sport Show alongside the

300SL 'Gullwing,' the 190SL was inspired by Mercedes-Benz importer Max Hoffman. Similar in appearance to the 300SL, yet less complex and costly, the 190SL's 'SL' (Sport Leichtbau) label denoted a sporting character, including lightweight aluminum for the hood, doors and rear decklid. Walter Hacker styled the 190SL body under direction of Mercedes-Benz design head Karl Wilfert, and among the designers was Paul Bracq, Mercedes' head of design for the 230/250/280 SL and 600. Rigid monocoque construction, roll-up windows and an available aluminum hardtop were other highlights. Fritz Nallinger led 190SL engineering, using proven mechanical components from the 'Ponton' line, including a SOHC 1.9-liter 'four' with twin Solex carburetors producing 105hp. Other components included a 4-speed manual gearbox, fully independent suspension and 4-wheel, power-assisted 'Alfin' drum brakes. Internally designated 'W121,' the production 190SL debuted at Geneva in 1955. An immediate success, the 190SL earned design awards in Holland, Switzerland and at France's Grand Prix d'Elegance. While intended as a stylish Grand Tourer without racing pretensions, the 190SL was effective in competition, including overall victory - ahead of a Ferrari Mondial at the 1956 Macao Grand Prix and the under 2.0-liter win at Casablanca. Confirming Hoffman's keen sense, the 190SL outsold the 300SL by a factor of eight to one. Offered from 18 years of ownership by a highly knowledgeable Mercedes-Benz dealer/collector and the attentive care of his professional collection staff, this 1959 Mercedes-Benz 190SL clearly benefits from a total, high-quality professional rotisserie restoration.
