Details

While 1974 marked the last model year (until 1977) for Chevrolet's fabled Z/28, it went out with a bang, nonetheless. Featuring revised front and rear treatments, the Camaro was seven inches longer than the year before with new aluminum impact-type bumper systems in compliance with stiffer DOT regulations. Regardless, the Camaro still looked great in hindsight, exuding a more pronounced, European-style Grand Touring persona. Upgraded built-in safety features and GM's new breakerless HEI High

Energy Ignition system were other updates to the sleek and handsome, second-generation Camaro for '74. Available as an option on the basic Camaro and more luxuriously trimmed Type LT, the Z/28 option package was the ultimate for performance fans. The standard Z/28 powerplant was the 245-horsepower RPO L82 engine, factory-rated at 245 horsepower. Essentially the LT-1 powerplant with a maintenance-free but surprisingly hot hydraulic camshaft, the L82 was essentially unchanged from 1973-model specs. The 4-speed manual transmissions for the Z/28, came with a 3.73 rear-axle ratio standard. With optional air conditioning, the ring and pinion were somewhat less aggressive 3.42 setup. Sport-tuned underpinnings, D80 spoilers and special 15x7 styled steel wheels with bright rim rings, center caps and bright lug nuts, and fat F60X15 bias-ply white-lettered tires rounded out the Z/28 goodies. Bold 'Z28' graphics were optionally available. While the American performance car was under siege from rising gas prices and insurance rates, 13,802 examples of the Z/28 were produced for 1974. Equipped with GM's floor-shifted turbo-Hydaramatic transmission, this example from 1974 was acquired for the Mile High Collection in 2015 and as a well-maintained 'survivor,' it retains very good paint and optional 'Z/28' graphics, good brightwork, and a woodgrain instrument cluster. From the Mile-High Collection.
