Details
After having stolen the title of America's best-selling muscle car away from Pontiac's GTO in 1969, Chevrolet's Chevelle SS moved upmarket to the top Malibu trim level and ushered in the new Z15 SS454 package - especially formidable with the RPO LS6 engine, underrated by the factory at 450hp. According to experts, 8,773 Chevelles and El Caminos were equipped with the RPO Z15 SS454 option for 1970 and, while no production breakout is available, GM Heritage Center records confirm 4,475 were equipped with the LS6 option for 1970. Provenance of this SS 454 coupe example is excellent, including single-family ownership from new to 1991 and subsequent ownership history personally tracked by the seller, who acquired the car in 2014. According to the original and exceptionally well-preserved Chevrolet build sheet, this LS6 Chevelle was built to Order Number TNT775 and assembled at Chevrolet's Lakewood Plant in Atlanta, GA. Delivered new to Price Chevrolet in Charlottesville, VA, it was built for serious performance, originally equipped with a Muncie M22 Rock Crusher 4-speed manual transmission, GW8 4.10:1 rear axle, G80 posi-traction, and solenoid-operated ZL2 cowl-induction hood, plus F41 Special Performance suspension, J50 power brakes with J52 front discs, a T60 heavy-duty battery and U14 gauges, including tachometer. Originally finished in Fathom Blue paint with RPO D88 hood and rear deck stripes over a businesslike black vinyl bench seat interior - the color combination it sports today - this LS6-powered SS 454 was also optioned with a UM1 AM radio and 8-track tape player, U76 windshield antenna and A01 full tinted glass. As offered, the SS 454 benefits from a freshly completed professional restoration to OEM specifications completed over a 3-year timeframe using the car's original parts and components, plus correct replacement items as required. Retaining all-original sheet metal, the SS 454 sports its originally specified color combination, according to the unaltered cowl tag, including the highly original and very well-preserved interior retaining the original AM radio and 8-track player. The matching-numbers LS6 engine and surrounding engine compartment are correctly presented, retaining proper components and accessories throughout. Offered with a 'Box A' Arizona title and 91,500 actual miles, this collector-worthy SS 454 is listed in the National Chevelle LS6 Registry (#24) and accompanied by restoration photos and receipts, the original Build Sheet (still affixed to the door panel) and ownership history.
