Shelby dropped Ford's higher-displacement Police Interceptor 428ci engine into the Mustang and thus the top-of-the-line GT500 was born in 1967. Ford Motor Company stylists ensured the Shelby GTs retained their own unique identities and, for 1968, the GT500 was updated with an aggressive new front-end treatment, including a hood with air scoops and louvered cooling vents, a neatly integrated rear spoiler and revised head and taillamps. belts was added and, for the first time, convertible variants of both the GT350 and the top-of-the-line GT500 were available. According to the Shelby American Automobile Club (SAAC), just 402 GT500 convertibles, including one for the Hertz Rent-A-Car company, were produced for 1968. Carrying Shelby serial #02066, this 1968 Shelby GT500 convertible features an Acapulco Blue paint finish with white accent stripes and a Saddle interior. Powered by a 4-barrel 428ci Police Interceptor engine mated to a C6 automatic transmission, the GT500 came equipped with factory air conditioning, a white power-operated convertible top, power steering, power brakes with front discs, an AM radio and tilt steering column.
