This clean 1974 Volkswagen Type 181 Thing is the last of the breed offered in America. Though production of civilian models continued in other countries through the 1980 model year, the U.S. Department of Transportation imposed stricter safety standards for the 1975 model year, which effectively outlawed sales of The Thing here. This one has been fully restored and has zero rust repair. Like all open top vehicles, VW Things are notorious for corrosion and rot, but this one has always been in a
dry climate and is truly pristine inside and underneath. Extra cosmetic touches include varnished wooden beach slats on the floor boards, fun yellow and white two-tone paint with matching seat upholstery and top. The stock gray-painted steel wheels have been upgraded with chromed rims and Porsche 356-inspired hub caps. Inside, a wicker under-dash storage tray stands ready to hold plenty of beach towels, sunscreen and Ray Bans. Up top, a wood-tone surfboard is included for the hang-ten crowd.
