Details
As optioned, one of one with vinyl interior option, chrome trim, upgraded steering wheel and rare 4.88 gearing. Big block Chevy Biscaynes of late 1960s were the ultimate sleeper cars. These stripped cars, devoid of any real options, sporting dog dish hubcaps, looked exactly as an entry-level car should. Introduced in 1966 as an RPO option, the L72 engine sported solid lifters and camshaft, 11:1 compression, 4-bolt main caps, massive, high-flowing rectangular port heads and an advertised 425hp.
Of more than 1.2 million full-sized Chevrolet cars produced in 1968, only 568 were equipped with an L72 motor, making it one of the rarest options fitted in any Chevrolet production year. Looking at other available options for these cars, only 12 1968 Biscaynes were reputed to have the 4.88 performance axle fitted. Performance options include M21 4-speed close ratio transmission, G80 posi-traction 4.88, F41 suspension, 425hp Turbo-Jet V8 and N40 power steering. Many original buyers of drag cars set about to modify their cars for even better performance as soon as delivered; original owner Ennis Lund was one of these. Although factory redline was 6,000rpm, Ennis regularly shifted at 7,200rpm. 4.88 posi-traction was a poor choice, as even with uprated shifting gearing was slightly 'short' for quarter mile. Most, if not all, of the drag cars, blew their original engines and were fitted with the upgraded '512' block, as has been done on this car. Retrofitted internally with a 4.56 posi-traction, the axle retains its original DP code. All original paintwork except for repairs on doors when 'Ennis's Menace' was removed by second owner in early 1970s. With the exceptions noted, everything on this car is as delivered from Chevrolet. Developed during 1968 and 1969 by the first two owners to be super-competitive. First owner: Ennis Lund, Sioux Falls SD. Raced under the moniker 'Ennis's Menace.' Never wrecked, no dents or scratches. Fully known ownership history. Less than 14,000 documented original miles, mileage not indicated on title.
