For 1968, Shelby rekindled his relationship with Hertz Rent-a-Car to resurrect their 'Rent-a-Racer' program with Shelby Mustangs as part of Hertz's Sports Car Club fleet. However, Hertz had wised up a bit since it ordered 999 cars in 1966, cutting 20 cities out of the program and scaling back marketing. As such, only 224 cars are known to be delivered according to the Shelby Registry, 223 according to Marti, and this time they ordered them in an array of colors. S/N 1262 seen here was one of 33

cars sent to San Francisco. After Hertz was finished with it, it went to an enthusiast in the Bay Area who owned it until 2005 when it then went to the most recent owner who commissioned a stunning, MCA concours-quality, rotisserie restoration on the very original car. It had no rust, so all of the original body panels were re-used and the car was repainted its rare factory original Candy Apple Red with all the correct side stripes, overspray and detailing. The matching numbers engine was rebuilt and is still mated to the original C4 automatic that all '68 Hertz cars had. It is also equipped with power disc brakes, power steering, upgraded Selectaire air conditioning, tilt top steering wheel, AM radio, fold down rear seat, shoulder harness and tinted glass. Included with the car is the original Build Sheet, Deluxe Marti Report, Shelby World Registry history and California Black Plate. The car has less than 50 test miles driven since completion and is arguably one of the finest Shelby GT350's in existence.
