From Porsches to Plymouths and Datsuns to Dodges, the gavels and SOLD stickers were flying Wednesday at the 48th Annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction. An incredibly diverse offering of more than 350 vehicles made their way across the auction block, where the growing trend of Japanese domestic market (JDM) cars continued to be evident, with three sales in that category – a 1990 Toyota Sera, a 1972 Datsun 240Z custom coupe and a 1987 Subaru Brat – setting new records at public auction.
An elated Bruce Arians celebrates when the sale of a 2019 Bennington SW Series boat hits $100,000 for his Arians Family Foundation.
The first of 13 charity vehicles made its way across the block today: a 2019 Bennington SW Series boat benefiting the Arians Family Foundation, which supports and develops programs to help prevent the abuse and neglect of children. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Coach Bruce Arians, Archie Bradley and Jake Lamb of the Arizona Diamondbacks, and University of Arizona head football coach Kevin Sumlin were onstage to encourage bidding on the brand-new boat, resulting in a $100,000 sale, 100% of which will go directly to the Foundation.
Another 15 pristine vehicles from the Bryan Frank Collection had their turn in the spotlight today, including a 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass W-31 Holiday Coupe that went to its new home for $55,000. Top sellers in Wednesday’s collector car auction included a 1970 Plymouth GTX Custom Coupe, a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 convertible and a 1969 Dodge Charger R/T.
Wednesday’s top-selling vehicle was this 1970 Plymouth GTX Custom Coupe, at $132,000.
The morning began with nearly 100 more authentic automobilia pieces on the auction block, where four expertly restored gas pumps – including 1940s-50s Gulf Oil, Pure Oil and Johnson Oil examples, as well as a unique model from the 1960s dressed in Shelby Cobra regalia – took top honors.
Ford and Chevrolet joined Dodge at the on-site track today, bringing the full complement of Ride ’N Drives and Thrill Rides to the event, the live build of a Factory Five Barrett-Jackson Edition Hot Rod Truck continued at the new Restoration Row, and two more complimentary Behind The Hobby Collector Car Symposiums brought a new level of knowledge about the industry to guests.
