After a rousing ’80s-themed Opening Night Gala Wednesday night, Thursday saw car enthusiasts in the Northeast streaming into the Expo Center and Mohegan Sun Arena as the first automobilia items and collector cars of the 4th Annual Northeast Auction had their turn on the famous Barrett-Jackson stage.
After the sale of a 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 to benefit the Automotive Technology Academy of Rockland BOCES, students and academy officials joined the winning bidder and Barrett-Jackson Chairman and CEO Craig Jackson to celebrate.
The first of three charity cars set to cross the auction block during the event made its appearance: a 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 to benefit the Automotive Technology Academy of the New York-based Rockland BOCES, which delivers educational programs for students with special needs, teens interested in career and technical training, adult learners preparing for new job opportunities and educators seeking to upgrade their professional skills. The iconic “blast from the past” car brought the hammer down on a winning bid of $20,000. During the excitement of the bidding process, there was a miscommunication of the final hammer price. Because of our commitment to the students of the Automotive Technology Academy, Barrett-Jackson has contributed an additional $10,000, to bring the total amount raised to the last-assumed bid of $30,000 – 100 percent of which will benefit the worthy organization.
A number of colorful gas pumps graced the Barrett-Jackson Automobilia Auction stage on Thursday morning, including the day’s top seller, a Texaco Sky Chief model (center) from the 1950s.
The morning began with nearly 159 exquisite and colorful pieces of the past in the spotlight at the Automobilia Auction, with a number of the always-popular gas pumps taking top honors for the day, as well as an eye-catching Amoco Oil lighted sign and an interesting Tireflator from the 1940s/50s with a lighter unit.
An eclectic mix of collectible vehicles paraded past an enthusiastic audience in the auction arena Thursday, from John Deere tractors from the 1940s and ’50s to classy Cadillacs and Thunderbirds. American muscle was also well-represented, as were the hot categories of pickups and SUVs. Among those particularly grabbing the attention of bidders were Corvettes from 1965 and 1970, a 1979 Trans Am and a 1958 Chevy Impala.
