1966 Chevrolet Nova Custom Coupe_Front_3-4

This 1966 Nova custom coupe offered with No Reserve at the 2019 Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas Auction is like a rocket booster for the model’s image and legend.

Despite its rather plain lines, the Nova was truly a shooting star in Chevrolet’s lineup. Designed to satisfy the emerging demand for smaller, yet practical family cars, the Nova filled the bill nicely. The two-door coupe versions did it beautifully. And, in 1966, the best of the SS models did it dramatically.

1966 Chevrolet Nova Custom Coupe_Side_ProfileThis particular example is the product of a complete professional restoration from the ground up ‒ and back down again. This 1966 Nova custom coupe offered with No Reserve is like a rocket booster for the model’s image and legend. All of its handsome and well-proportioned body lines have been maintained but are now shaved and massaged to perfection ‒ just like the original designers probably imagined this car before they were forced to add clutter to it with things like door handles, trim pieces and badges. Notice that the side vent windows were erased and replaced with single-pane door glass, creating an even smoother profile.

To begin with, the car’s stock frame was completely revitalized, including subframe connecters to enhance structural rigidity. Under-hood detail is extraordinary and includes a carbon-fiber engine cover, billet hood hinges, polished AC compressor, alternator and related pulleys. A cowl hood hints of power, and a 346ci Chevrolet LS1 aluminum V8 provides it. Its GM 460E overdrive automatic transmission proves its efficiency and performance at the drop of a hat (or shoe). An aluminum radiator with dual electric fans keep this hot rod cool on all counts.

1966 Chevrolet Nova Custom Coupe_Rear_3-4Out back, a custom 9-inch Ford differential sporting 3.73 gears with posi-traction is located by a state-of-the-science four-link suspension system that includes coilover shock assemblies. An aftermarket aluminum fuel tank rounds out the scenery underneath.

Up front lies additional suspension refinery with chromed tubular control arms, a chrome-plated anti-sway bar and its own coilover shock upgrade. A contemporary rack & pinion steering package helps secure the level of driving precision you’re looking for in a modern classic muscle car. Power-assisted Wilwood vented disc brakes at all corners add even more confidence to your driving experience. U.S. Mags – 17-inch fronts and 18-inch rears – take care of the rolling stock and add further style to this Nova as it streaks through space with you at the wheel.

1966 Chevrolet Nova Custom Coupe_InteriorThe Ferrari-like bright red exterior paint and inviting custom tan interior combine to give this car the visual appeal of a fine exotic. AutoMeter gauges were added for your viewing pleasure and are mounted in a hand-fabricated panel. A custom console was created and blends in perfectly to the contours. You’ll find all the comforts of your expectation, including air conditioning, power steering, tilt column, a modern leather-accented steering wheel, electric seats, electric windows and remote door poppers. An Autosound AM/FM stereo system provides any additional entertainment the driver might need ‒ besides that of a high-revving, fuel-injected Chevy small block.

This rarely driven machine is still a virtually brand-new 1966 Nova, just better in every imaginable way.

The Nova’s classic, unpretentious design has captured the hearts of thousand and has done so for generations. If you’re thinking about a bright red shining example of one, here’s an opportunity to hitch your wagon to a star.
