Resto-Mod and Custom. The terms seem almost interchangeable. While the two concepts share many elements, there are distinct differences between the two styles.
As the name implies, Resto-Mods are vehicles that have been restored with some modifications. Often, they retain the spirit of their original stock form while being performance focused. Resto-Mods have gained popularity over the last decade, as reflected on the auction block.
Numerous aftermarket companies offer EFI conversion kits, modern suspension, disc brake conversion kits, power steering upgrades, or even complete chassis swaps for just about any vehicle. Resto-Mods often start small with simple bolt-on upgrades. Though they have evolved, it has become increasingly popular to drop in a modern crate engine.
Meanwhile, an actual custom car emphasizes style first. That’s not to say performance isn’t essential, but how the car looks is paramount. Many high-level customs start as something familiar, or they may be built entirely from scratch using raw metal or fiberglass. Regardless of how they start, they all become one-of-a-kind pieces that many consider art. The most extreme examples feature modifications like chopped rooflines, louvered hoods and frenched headlights.
Resto-Mods and customs appeal to different people for different reasons. Some love the idea of owning a classic with the performance and reliability of a modern car while others love the unique style. No matter which element tempts you, the concept of making your vehicle truly your own will never go out of style.
Each of these customs will be crossing the block at the June 30 – July 2, 2022, Las Vegas Auction in the Convention Center – West Hall.
