PATH TO PERFORMANCE: On the Road to the 2024 Barrett-Jackson Cup with Castrol

Barrett-Jackson and Castrol have teamed up for the Castrol EDGE Path to Performance, a web series available on YouTube that documents four builders who are each creating a custom, one-of-a-kind build to compete in the 2024 Barrett-Jackson Cup. This unique series gives viewers a look at what goes into creating fully customized builds created by four different builders that are at the top of their game.

The Barrett-Jackson Cup was first introduced in 2013 and has an important legacy in the world of custom cars. “Barrett-Jackson helped pioneer Resto-Mod culture,” said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “As technology has progressed, so has the quality and workmanship of these beautiful custom vehicles. The Cup provides builders the opportunity to showcase their talent.”

Each year, 50 spectacular machines from all spectrums of the automotive hobby vie for the coveted “Ultimate Best in Show” award plus a cash purse in a fierce competition that celebrates innovation, artistry and craftsmanship in the collector car hobby. Renowned builders Bobby Alloway and Troy Trepanier serve as Cup judges.

For this competition, there is no rule against asking, “What if?” The Path to Performance series provides viewers with a behind-the-scenes look at four builders who turn their creative visions from blank canvas into reality – each creating a custom vehicle that will compete in the 2024 Barrett-Jackson Cup.

Among the builders highlighted in the series is Troy Gudgel of BBT Fabrications, the defending Barrett-Jackson Cup Champion. Grudgel won the 2023 Cup with a custom 1969 Pontiac Firebird that holds a land-speed racing class record for the ECTA standing mile with 199.027 mph. To defend their title, the BBT Fabrications team will be building a 1959 Chevrolet Impala that they plan to show off at the 2024 Cup in its bare metal form to show off their metalworking skills.

Jeff and Jesse Greening from the Greening Auto Company plan to show a 1961 Chevrolet Biscayne, while fellow competitors Jeremy and Phil Gerber, owners of the Roadster Shop, are building a Mid-1970s Chevrolet square body pickup truck. Lastly, Joe and Paul Van Nus from Dutchboys Hot Rods will bring a 1967 Chevrolet Chevy II to the Barrett-Jackson Cup Competition.

Each builder is known for something different – whether it is fabrication, chassis, paintwork or bodywork. One thing is certain though – each builder will be showing off their skills to the fullest. After all, pushing boundaries is what the Barrett-Jackson Cup Competition is all about, and there is no grander stage than during the flagship Scottsdale Auction that takes place each January, where the winners will be decided.
