LOT #1330 – 1972 FORD BRONCO CUSTOM SUV – NO RESERVE

In the world of custom builds, few vehicles can capture the spirit of rugged simplicity like the first-generation Ford Bronco. Now imagine not one but two exquisite examples of this timeless icon, both reimagined with painstaking craftsmanship.

Meet “Rooster,” a 1972 Ford Bronco (Lot #1330) and “Phoenix,” a 1973 Bronco (Lot #1330.1), two custom four-wheel-drive builds that honor the Bronco’s off-road legacy while elevating it to new heights of innovation and luxury. Each of these Broncos was named after two of the main characters, Natasha “Phoenix” Trace and Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, in the 2022 movie “Top Gun: Maverick.” Phoenix and Rooster are the sister builds to “Maverick” and “Goose,” a pair of 1970 Ford Broncos from the same consignor that were sold at the 2023 Scottsdale Auction, named after the characters in the original 1986 “Top Gun” movie.

Phoenix and Rooster, while sharing a common DNA and selling with No Reserve at the 2025 Scottsdale Auction, Jan. 18-26, tell two unique tales of passion, engineering tenacity and aesthetic brilliance. Let’s dive into their stories and celebrate their individuality.

280731_Rear_3-4At first glance, Rooster and Phoenix share a strikingly similar foundation. Both underwent frame-off restorations with over 2,000 hours dedicated to perfecting each detail. Each boasts the formidable 465 horsepower Gen 3 5.0-liter Coyote crate engine, paired with Ford’s 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission and a Pro Atlas twin-stick dual-range transfer case, capable of handling up to 750 horsepower. Their engine bays are works of art, featuring custom cold-air intakes, remote oil reservoirs and backlit engine covers designed to complement their respective exteriors.

Despite their shared roots, these Broncos diverge into distinct expressions of creativity and purpose. From their exterior palettes to their chassis setups, Rooster and Phoenix highlight the limitless possibilities of customizing a classic while retaining its essence.

Both Broncos are built for performance, but their setups cater to slightly different adventures. Rooster retains its classic Dana 44 front axle and Ford 9-inch rear end, delivering a balance of reliability and ruggedness. Its slotted disc brakes and 5.5-inch lift provide optimal drivability without compromising comfort. Phoenix, with its Currie axles and chromoly upgrades, is tailored for more extreme terrain. The beadlock wheels and BFGoodrich M/T tires enhance its off-road prowess, while the dual Flowmaster exhaust ensures it sounds as aggressive as it looks.

LOT #1330.1 – 1973 FORD BRONCO CUSTOM SUV – NO RESERVE

Rooster’s exterior gleams in Diamond Ice Blue, accented by chrome moldings that wrap around the vehicle. Uncut rear fenders preserve the Bronco’s original design, while 17×9-inch U.S. Mags Indy wheels and 35-inch tires provide a classic yet rugged stance. The OEM-style bumpers, paired with modern touches like Amp Research steps, give Rooster a timeless appeal with a contemporary twist.

The roof of each Bronco plays a central role in blending utility and style. Rooster sports a hardtop painted in Wimbledon White, engineered with a Paradise custom hoisting system. This design allows the top to be removed or reinstalled in under 15 minutes without tools. Hidden metal reinforcements ensure the roof’s durability during handling, while retractable billet lifting points add a touch of modern sophistication. When the hardtop is off, custom-designed rear panels provide a polished look.

Phoenix also integrates Wimbledon White into its roof scheme, but the emphasis here lies in its harmony with the PPG Porsche Lava Orange body, enhanced by hand-pinstriped tailgate letters. This bold, fiery combination evokes the mythical bird rising from the ashes, befitting its name. The roof seamlessly transitions into the painted roll bar and dash, creating a cohesive design that enhances the vehicle’s sporty and dynamic appearance.

Step inside either of these Broncos and you’re greeted with luxury that rivals most high-end sedans. Both vehicles feature custom leather by Unique Upholstery, Dakota Digital gauges and Vintage Air climate systems. Yet, even here, their individual personalities shine through.

280772_Rear_3-4Rooster’s interior is defined by its classic herringbone seat inserts and warm tones that complement its Ice Blue exterior. The attention to detail extends to the custom center console and leather-wrapped dash pad, blending vintage charm with contemporary craftsmanship. Phoenix, true to its namesake, embraces innovation with heated, cooled and massaging seats for all occupants. The interior lighting and Bluetooth-controlled features add a tech-savvy edge, while the high-end leather and custom touches create an atmosphere of exclusivity. The vibrant orange accents carry into the cabin, uniting the interior and exterior into a cohesive visual narrative.

Ultimately, Rooster and Phoenix represent what a first-generation Bronco can become. Whether you’re drawn to the timeless elegance of Rooster or the fiery boldness of Phoenix, both vehicles embody the spirit of customization and the enduring appeal of a classic. These builds prove that even legends can be reimagined without losing their soul – each a testament to automotive artistry and passion.
