The Northeast’s appreciation of collector cars and the automotive lifestyle that is Barrett-Jackson was fully evident for a second day as thousands of fans filled the auction arena at Mohegan Sun and also discovered the many other things to do around the vast auction site.
Ava Cosgrove, age 12, performed a moving rendition of the National Anthem to kick off today’s auction.
Throughout the day, the hot laps at the Ride ’N Drives and Thrill Rides were sizzling, the Exhibitor Marketplace and sponsor exhibits were buzzing with activity, and cameras were out in full force as visitors snapped close-up photos of the hundreds of auction vehicles on display or getting prepped for their trip across the block in the Staging Lanes.
Every auction has incredibly moving moments. Guests at the Northeast Auction experienced just that this morning when there were cheers and tears as 12-year-old Ava Cosgrove performed a very touching rendition of the National Anthem to officially start the day.
The bidding action began with more than 100 exquisite Automobilia items up on stage in the morning, from cast-iron toys and tin signs to pedal cars and gas pumps. Top sellers of the day, however, were three large neon signs from the ’40s and ’50s, as well as a remarkable visible gas pump from 1928.
Medal of Honor recipient Lieutenant Michael E. Thornton, Founder & President of Wounded Warriors Family Support Colonel John D. Folsom, Craig Jackson, and winning bidder Michael J Schwartz after the sale of the one-of-a-kind “Medal of Honor Thunderbird” (Lot #3002).
Two more cars for a cause crossed the auction block today. The first was a unique 1956 Ford Thunderbird convertible (Lot #3002) custom-painted with a mural recreating historic photographs that depict the sacrifices made during combat. Retired U.S. Navy SEAL and Medal of Honor recipient Lieutenant Michael Thornton, a founding member of SEAL Team Six, was among those presenting the “Medal of Honor Thunderbird” for auction is signed by 22 Medal of Honor recipients. The one-of-a-kind car raised $80,000 for Wounded Warriors Family Support.
Aaron Shelby, grandson of Carroll Shelby, brought Lot #3003, a 2016 Shelby GT-H Prototype, to the block to benefit the Carroll Shelby Foundation, raising $150,000 for the worthy cause.
Carroll Shelby’s grandson Aaron brought the day’s second charity car to the stage: a very special 2016 Ford Shelby GT-H Prototype (Lot #3003) – the first of only 170 total 2016 model-year Shelby GT-H coupes to be built to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Ford, Hertz and Shelby American car. The hammer came down on a winning bid of $150,000 – every penny of which will go to the Carroll Shelby Foundation.
You never know who’s going to stop by a Barrett-Jackson auction! Familiar to many fans of the “Fast N’ Loud” TV show, Richard Rawlings and his Gas Monkey Garage crew were on hand to watch seven of their cars cross the block today, and Wayne Carini from “Chasing Classic Cars” was also on-site. Collector car fan Buddy Valastro, a.k.a. “The Cake Boss,” stopped by to surprise Craig Jackson with a sweet cake replica of the 1934 Cadillac 370D V12 Fleetwood Coupe that Craig’s mother, Nellie Jackson, once owned, which Craig purchased at the 2016 Scottsdale Auction.
From pickups to Porsches, there was a little something for everyone crossing the block during the second day of Barrett-Jackson’s Inaugural Northeast Auction. The video and gallery below provide today’s highlights and just a small taste of all the activity around the auction site here in Connecticut:
