Description

Summary

1972 Oldsmobile 442 Hurst Pace Car Edition powered by a 455ci 8-cylinder engine mated to an automatic transmission. Was purchased from the original owner and has 56,000 original miles (mileage not indicated on title).

Details

There were a total of 629 Oldsmobile Hurst Pace Cars made in 1972, 499 total hardtops were built with 279 hardtops without sunroofs produced. This car is one of the 279. The 1972 Hurst/Olds pace car was actually developed by Hurst Performance, and not Oldsmobile. Due to a tragic accident involving the 1971 Indy Pace car, which was a Dodge Challenger, the major auto manufacturers were reluctant to provide the pace car for the 1972 Indy race. Hurst Performance stepped up and volunteered to

sponsor the 1972 pace car. Oldsmobile provided the Cutlass Supreme coupe and convertible. It was the first and only time an Indy Pace car was sponsored by a manufacturer other than an automobile manufacturer, and first time to include a major supplier's name in the title. The only color available was Cameo White with reflective 3M gold stripes that were stickers, not paint. This car features a matching numbers 455cid Rocket V8 rated at 270hp mated to a Turbo Hydra-matic 400 automatic transmission with console-mounted Hurst 'Dual Gate' shifter and a W-25 Ram Air Hood. Original interior features air conditioning (that needs charged) and an 8-track player. The 1972 Hurst/Olds pace car edition coupe offered here is a 56,000 original mile car (not indicated on title) with original owner’s manual and includes the signature of Jack 'Doc' Watson in the trunk. Watson worked alongside George Hurst at Hurst Performance, and helped develop the world-famous Hurst shifter and other innovations, including the Hurst/Olds 442 and Hurst Hairy Olds Cutlass drag/exhibition cars. This car was purchased from original owner and has been garaged inside. A clean car that runs and drives well.
