The first generation Camaro debuted in September 1966 for the 1967 model year. Concerned with the runaway success of the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet executives realized that their compact sporty car, the Corvair, would not be able to generate the sales volume of the Mustang due to its rear engine design, as well as declining sales, partly due to the negative publicity from Ralph Nader's book 'Unsafe at Any Speed.' Therefore, the Camaro was touted as having the same conventional rear-drive, front

engine configuration as the Mustang and Chevy II Nova. In addition, the Camaro was designed to fit all variety of powerplants in the engine bay. By 1969 the Camaro had taken its place as one of the top muscle cars in the industry, in fact it had become so popular that Ford found itself having to compete to keep market share. By 1969 production had grown to over 220,000 units with an overwhelming majority being the Camaro Sport Coupes. When the Camaro was chosen to pace the Indy 500 in 1969, Chevrolet chose their top performer, the 396cid Camaro SS. This car is an original SS 396cid big block Camaro with 3-speed M40 automatic transmission and factory 12-bolt rear axle. It is one of 6,752 Camaros available with the high performance L35 325hp engine. It has received a concours quality restoration and is certified by Camaro expert Jerry MacNeish. It has been driven only 370 miles since restoration. Rare Forest Green paint and Z87 deluxe interior with black houndstooth bucket seats are correct for the car and in excellent condition. Options include factory air conditioning, 12-bolt rear end with posi-traction, Goodyear Polyglas tires with Rally wheels, power steering, power disc brakes, rear spoiler and tilt steering. Attention to detail includes factory instruction tags and protective covers still in place throughout the car with assembly line markings carefully reproduced in the engine compartment and underside of car.
