It was a Friday full of exciting moments, but none more exciting than the much-anticipated auction of a VIN #001 2017 Acura NSX on the Barrett-Jackson block today, with the auction arena filled to capacity. The NSX has caused a stir in the automotive world since it was unveiled, and there’s been much speculation about who would own the very first one. The guessing game is over: NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick will carry those keys. He generously paid a remarkable $1.2 million for that privilege, knowing that 100 percent of that money will go to two great causes: the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation and musician Zac Brown’s Camp Southern Ground. The philanthropic auction was the highest charity sale of a VIN #001 manufacturer car in Barrett-Jackson history.

Another highlight today came in the form of a 2006 Ford F-150 Harley-Davidson Edition Pickup owned by comedian Jay Leno, who drove it up on the block with Mark Fields, President and CEO of Ford Motor Company, riding shotgun. With the promise that the winning bidder could collect the car from Leno’s renowned garage in Los Angeles, bids soared, with the hammer coming down on $200,000 – all of which will go to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The third car auctioned for a cause was a stunning VIN #001 COPO Camaro donated by Chevrolet. The car way designed by Courtney Force, driver of the Traxxas Chevrolet Camaro SS Funny Car for John Force Racing, and both she and her 16-time Funny Car Champion dad were on the block to encourage bidding. The end result was an impressive $300,000 winning bid, which will go entirely to United Way.

Apart from the charity cars, Chevrolet had a good showing on the auction block overall today, snagging three spots in the top five sales with two Corvettes and a Chevelle. The top seller of the day was a pristine 1957 Ford Thunderbird E-Series Convertible (Lot #1074) , which sold for $286,000. The Trans Am train kept rolling, too, with three 1974 Super Duty models ringing the bell at $95,200, $106,700 and $107,800.

More familiar faces were sighted around the auction site today, including actors Burt Reynolds and Steven Seagal, Gas Monkey Garage’s Richard Rawlings, baseball legend Reggie Jackson, New York Yankees outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, former New York Giant cornerback Jason Sehorn, two-time Masters champ Bubba Watson, and racing greats Jeff Gordon, Rusty Wallace, Don Prudhomme, Joey Logano, Parnelli Jones and Arie Luyendyk.

Enjoy tonight’s gallery of today’s top sellers and memorable moments at the auction. Be sure to join us tomorrow as the official “Smokey and the Bandit” movie promo car comes to the block, along with Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, and hundreds more extraordinary collector cars.
