LOT #721 – 1961 CHEVROLET IMPALA CUSTOM BUBBLE TOP – NO RESERVE
By the time Dinah Shore was belting out “See The USA In Your Chevrolet” on her television variety shows in the 1950s, the automobile company started by brothers Louis and Arthur Chevrolet, along with William C. Durant, had already been in business for four decades. By 1919, the Chevrolet brand had become the volume leader in the General Motors family, selling mainstream vehicles to compete with Henry Ford’s Model T and overtaking Ford as the best-selling car in the United States by 1929 with the Chevrolet International.
It was during the 1950s and ’60s, though, that Chevrolet had perhaps its greatest influence on the American automobile market. In 1953 it produced the incredibly popular Corvette, known as “America’s sports car” and now in its 8th generation. The company pioneered the small-block V8 engine in 1955, which has remained in continuous production since that time (longer than any other mass-produced engine design in the global automotive industry). Subsequent years saw the birth of iconic automobiles like the Bel Air, the Corvair, the Impala (Chevrolet’s best-selling model of all time), the Chevelle, the Nova and, of course, the Camaro. Arriving in 1966 at the height of the muscle-car era, the Camaro, together with Ford’s Mustang, created a new segment in the market known as “pony cars.” In 1969, the Blazer was launched – a model favored by custom builders today for the creation of some truly eye-popping Resto-Mods.
There will be Chevrolets aplenty crossing the block with No Reserve during the Barrett-Jackson’s upcoming Scottsdale Fall Auction – here’s a six-pack of them to get that Bowtie buzz going!
