Details

Jesse has had the idea on his list of turning a fast car into train since Monster Garage began. The Dodge Train Car was transformed from a 2005 Dodge Magnum RT complete with HEMI into a speeding train. The hydraulics on this car includes a 12-volt DC motor, 1.25-gallons-per-minute pump, two-station parallel manifold, directional control valve, crossover relief valve, pilot-operated check valve and cylinders powered by nitrogen accumulators. Note: The hydraulic system was 'overbuilt' due to safety concerns. The moving parts include an arm system attached to the frame, body and fender for the train wheels. The heavy load-bearing arm system that holds the four train wheels required strong vertical up-weave welds. MIG and TIG welds were both used on the 'cow-catcher' in the front. Using an engine lathe, the team machined a new train wheel from a blank block of steel. The team also removed the Dodge's rear storage area to fit the hydraulic system and did minor fender work to make room for the train wheels. The team's biggest challenge was designing and assembling the train car without having the wheels available, which didn't arrive until the last day of the build.
