The designation 'Super 88' began to be used by Oldsmobile in 1951 to distinguish such deluxe '88' models from the standard '88' models. The designation 'Golden Rocket' was based on Oldsmobile's 1956 show car of the same name. It was adopted by Oldsmobile in 1957 for it's '88' and 'Super 88' models, while at the same time it's '98' models were assigned the designation of 'Starfire'. The superb example of the 1957 Oldsmobile Golden Rocket Super 88 convertible you are viewing today was one of only 7,128 produced in 1957, but it has the further rare distinction (for a convertible of it's vintage) of being equipped with factory air conditioning. It has Oldsmobile's 317-cid V-8 engine producing 277 HP. The original cost was $3,447. The 1957 Oldsmobiles were rather cleanly styled, and approximately 400,000 automobiles were built for the model year. The previous owner, a dentist and car collector in Florida, completed a frame-on restoration 6 years ago. The car was sold to a classic car dealer in that state and I purchased it in 2005. All chrome on front and rear and many interior items have recently been re-chromed to show quality. Car has been driven less than 200 miles under my ownership.
